Hyphenated-Homestead

I had one of those completely unnecessary thoughts this morning. You know, the kind that solves absolutely nothing but still occupies some space in your brain.

I was thinking about AI.

For most of my corporate career, AI meant one thing:

Action Item.

Meetings would end with perfectly normal sentences like:

“Okay, Mandar has the AI on that.”

“I’ll take that AI.”

“Can we close those three AIs before Friday?”

Nobody panicked.

Nobody wondered whether Mandar was secretly building a large language model over lunch. AI simply meant somebody had left the meeting with more work than they entered with.😁

Then, somewhere in the last three years, Artificial Intelligence arrived, looked at our little corporate acronym and basically said:

“Thanks. I’ll take it from here.”

Now if I say, “I have an AI for you,” people may expect ChatGPT, Claude or automation, predictive analytics and possibly the end of civilization.

And I’m standing there holding a spreadsheet saying, “No, no. You just need to email Bob.”

Twenty-five years of vocabulary. Gone. Poof!

Which brought me to Alexa.

Once upon a time, Alexa was simply a perfectly nice girl’s name.

“Have you met Alexa?”

“Oh yes, lovely person.”

Today?

“Alexa!”

And somewhere, three devices light up.

And I genuinely wonder whether parents still look at a newborn baby girl and say: “She looks like an Alexa.” Because there is now at least a small chance someone in the delivery room will respond: “Sorry, I didn’t understand that.” 😁

So now I’m curious.

What other words, names or acronyms can you think of that meant something completely different before technology, brands or modern life permanently hijacked them?

And please don’t say X.

That poor letter has been through enough. 😁
