If your inner critic is loud, make your inner cheerleader louder.

We All Have That Voice…
You know the one—the voice that whispers, “You’re not good enough,” “You’ll mess this up,” or “Why even bother?” It’s that nagging inner critic that seems to have a PhD in negativity.
For years, I thought this voice was just being realistic. I let it talk me out of ideas, convince me that I wasn’t “ready yet,” and make me overanalyze things to the point of inaction. Sound familiar?
But then I realized something. If I have an inner critic, why can’t I have an inner cheerleader too?
Flipping the Script
Imagine if, every time your inner critic spoke up, your inner cheerleader had a comeback:
- “You’re not good at this.” → “Of course not—yet! But I’m learning.”
- “People won’t take you seriously.” → “People admire effort more than perfection.”
- “You’ll probably fail.” → “And I’ll learn something valuable when I do.”
It’s not about ignoring self-doubt altogether. It’s about making sure your inner cheerleader gets equal airtime.
Your Turn
Try this today: The next time your inner critic speaks up, respond as your own biggest fan. What would you say to a friend in the same situation? Say that to yourself.
Who’s winning in your head—your critic or your cheerleader? Drop a comment and let me know how you keep your inner voice in check.
